I’ve been on a kick doing home remedies to help with dryness lately because it’s an issue that is near and “dear” to my heart. Almost as bad as chapped lips is a dry nose or more specifically, dried out nasal passages. As the weather gets cold and I find myself reaching for tissue more often, I am starting to feel the painful dryness set in. It gets so bad I just dread waking up in the morning. While many people turn for a little tub of petroleum jelly, I tend to steer clear of that especially since you can end up inhaling it, which isn’t a good thing if you wind up with a glob in your lungs.

1. Coconut oil
Coconut oil is simple, natural, effective, and it smells good. It also doesn’t glob like petroleum jelly does, so the risk of a big chunk getting sucked up isn’t there (although its solid at room temperature, it’s softened before use here .)

2. Steam Bowl
Allowing steam to fill your noise can moisten the mucous membranes that have become dried out and painful. This really helps relieve discomfort in the short-term, and also clears out your nose so you don’t have to blow it a bunch (which dries it out even more.) With each breath it’s like a warm comforting wave of moisture is sinking into your sore nose and making it feel better by the second. I usually follow this treatment with coconut oil about 15 minutes afterwards.

3. Almond Oil and Aloe Vera Gel
Almond oil is a natural emollient, or moisturizer, helping the sensitive skin in the nostril to become softer and more pliable, therefore lessening the chance that it will crack. It may also help lessen evaporation. Aloe vera can help soothe the dryness quickly, but it won’t provide the same lasting moisture as the almond oil. I use it mostly for the initial relief (I refrigerate mine) but you can stick to just almond oil if you like.

One more unpleasant possibility: the cotton head can pop off in your ear canal. If that happens, you need to see a doc to have it removed.

“People will stick just about anything they can think of into their ears when they feel discomfort—their long finger nails, bobby pins, sewing needles, keys, to name a few.” Anything sharp or shaped similarly to a cotton swab will pose the same risks of cutting the skin and damaging the inner and outer ear.

This practice involves placing a hollow, cone-shaped candle into the ear. The heat of the flame supposedly creates a vacuum effect, drawing wax to the candle. While some folks have anecdotal tales of success with candling,research has shown it’s bunk, and Dr. Chernobilsky considers it extremely dangerous: “I have seen eardrum perforations and burns from people’s hair catching on fire.” Yep, we’ll pass!

Rinsing with a syringe

“While this method is generally safe if done right, you are doing it blindly, and you can get a swimmer’s ear if the ear isn’t dried properly when you are done,” Dr. Chernobilsky says. In short: Your ears are not the place to build your own irrigation system.

Is there a safe way to remove wax?

Your best bet when it comes to earwax: Let it be.But certain people may accumulate wax faster, Dr. Chernobilsky explains. “These are the peoplethat use hearing aids with in-the-ear molds, doctors that use stethoscopes, musicians that use ear plugs, or people that use ear buds to listen to music, to name a few.” If your wax buildup really bothers you, visit your primary care provider or an otolaryngologist every few months to have your ears cleaned out.Between those doctor visits, you can try an over-the-counter wax softener, as long as you know that your ears are otherwise healthy and you don’t have any cuts in or around the eardrum. Softening products typically involve drops or an oily solution that loosen wax and help it slide to the outer ear. Some products also come with peroxide to dissolve the stuff. “The [softeners] that are oil-based are just fine,” says Dr. Chernobilsky. But if you use a product with peroxide and have a cut, it will burn.He also warns that if you’ve got a large plug of wax, a softener could make you feel much worse: “The peroxide can cause the wax to expand and cause significant pain, pressure, and hearing loss without dissolving the plug.”

If you have yellow-red discoloring on your nail, often called an “oil drop” or “salmon patch,” you should consult your dermatologist. Here are other symptoms that can also indicate psoriasis:
•        Indentations: Nicks or pits on the nail plate, which is the hard part of the nail that covers the fingertips.
•        Beau’s lines: Lines that run side-to-side across the nail.
•        Skin thickening/nail loosening: Thickening of skin under the nail, which can dislodge the nail (onycholysis) from the nail bed. This generally starts at the tip and works their way toward the cuticle.
•        White areas: Distinct white spots on the nails, also called leukonychia. (The cloudy white spots that sometimes appear on fingernails and toenails do not fall into the category, and aren’t cause for concern, according to Dr. Poblete-Lopez.)
•        Black lines: Black lines running from tip to cuticle could be tiny clots called splinter hemorrhages or dilated and burst capillaries — potential symptoms of psoriasis.
•        Redness: The usually pale areas near the cuticle turn red, which could be caused by congested capillaries, another possible sign of psoriasis.

5. Kidney disease
Several nail changes can indicate the presence of acute or chronic kidney disease, Dr. Poblete-Lopez says:
•        Beau’s lines: These side-to-side lines can be a symptom of acute kidney disease.
•        Ridged nails: Also called koilonychia, rough nails with ridges can exist in the presence of kidney disease. These nails are also frequently spoon-shaped and concave, and they can point to iron-deficiency anemia.
•        White streaks/spots: Similar to psoriasis cases, distinct white streaks and spots on nails can point to chronic kidney disease.

6. Darier disease
Darier disease is a rare genetic disorder that appears mostly in adolescence. It shows up in the fingernails and toenails as broad, white or reddish stripes that run from cuticle to tip. A V-shaped nick near the fingertip can also indicate this condition, Dr. Poblete-Lopez says.
Prevention
Preventing underlying conditions that impact your nails isn’t always possible, Dr. Poblete-Lopez says, but you can care for your nails by staying hydrated and eating a well-balanced diet. Be sure you’re consuming enough Vitamin B and zinc because those nutrients greatly strengthen your nails.
In many cases, she says, changes to your nails can be normal and don’t point to any undiagnosed health changes. But, if you have a question, consulting your doctor is always best.
“Some nails may not appear smooth or they might have longitudinal strips or ridges. As long as whatever you see is consistent throughout the distribution of the nail, it’s likely OK,” she says. “If there’s something out of the ordinary, though, it’s reasonable to see a dermatologist.”
